• Tooling & molds: die-cast metal claws and molded plastic clips need steel molds. A new mold is a one-time cost; the MOQ spreads it per unit. Using an existing style keeps the minimum low.
• Material & process: acetate is cut and polished (slow, skilled work), ABS is injection-molded (fast). Slower processes justify lower MOQs; automated ones run cheaper in bulk.
• Customization depth: a standard color swap barely moves the minimum. Custom shapes, embossed logos, printed ribbons, or custom packaging each add setup steps and raise the floor.
• Per-SKU vs per-order: many factories quote MOQ per style per color. Mixing colors within a style is usually negotiable; quoting a true mixed-order minimum requires volume.

The fastest way to overpay is to think of MOQ as a wall. It is a floor — and floors are negotiable with the right structure:

• Mix colors within the style: a 500-piece order split across 5 colors usually runs at the same cost as 500 of one color. Use this to test the market with variety.
• Mix styles in one shipment: combine a 100-piece acetate style with a 300-piece plastic style on the same purchase order to average out the minimums.
• Test first, commit later: order the standard styles at low volume to validate your market, then scale custom work once sales data exists. Testing with stock styles avoids tooling costs entirely.
• Consolidate seasons: one larger twice-a-year order beats four small orders — fewer setups, lower freight per unit, better MOQ leverage.

• Choose existing styles: every catalog item already has tooling paid for — the MOQ reflects production, not mold amortization.
• Reduce customization: standard colors instead of custom Pantone, printed label instead of woven, one finish instead of three.
• Accept a stock/blank option: unbranded or lightly branded versions drop the minimum further.
• Negotiate a trial order: many factories (including us) allow a small paid trial at a higher unit price to prove quality before committing to the full minimum.
• Order in off-season: capacity is slack in Q1–Q2; factories are more flexible on minimums between seasonal peaks.

Samples, Tooling & What Costs What

Sample policy varies more than MOQ policy, so ask before you assume. Industry norms: stock-style samples are often free or nominal-cost (you pay shipping); custom samples carry a fee that is credited against your first production order; new molds are quoted separately and typically range from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars depending on complexity. Tooling costs are negotiable — some factories amortize molds into the first order instead of charging upfront.
